Are You a Serial Crafter?

I’ve always gotten flack for the wide range of crafts that I try/do/write about here. I hear often that I should focus on one thing and get really good at it. Become an expert. Becoming an expert is supposed to be the key to making a living.

But I’m more of a serial crafter.

When I sit and try to find ONE THING that I want to do for the next few years and get really, really good at my brain freezes up and refuses to move forward like some machine with a widget stuck in the sprocket. Nope. Can’t do it. Can’t decide.

Over the past couple of years I have naturally found myself culling what used to be semi-appealing crafts. Paper crafts? Meh, not so much. I donated most of my stamps and inks to local groups who could use them.

The same thing happened with general crafty things. Clay pots, kids crafts, and those sorts of things I did when I worked at a craft store. I’m just not into 20 minute crafts that use a plethora of cheap-o supplies these days.

I donated all of my google eyes, pipe cleaners and pom poms making room for work that I enjoy more.

But that still leaves a whole boat load of crafts that I do spend time on.

Are you a serial crafter? Here is how you might know.

You Might Be a Serial Crafter If:

  1. Your craft space looks like a small craft store blew up.
  2. You know how to do crafts that most people have forgotten about.
  3. When a friend talks about a new craft she has discovered you say, “I’ve done that!”
  4. When someone tells you about supplies they need to buy for a project you say, “Don’t bother, I’ll give you some.”
  5. You are the first person people think of when they need help with a project.
  6. You’ve spent more money in the past six months at craft stores than at the grocery store.
  7. You have fabric ONLY scissors and paper ONLY scissors.
  8. People drag things into your house because they know you can do something with it.
  9. You can knock off expensive/trendy jewelry without spending a dime.
  10. You break out in hives when someone says, “MODGE Podge.”
  11. You have several tote bags with various crafts inside for on the go crafting.
  12. You don’t think twice about making something using a technique you’ve never tried.
  13. You are happy to try something new because you probably already have most of the supplies.
  14. When you see a tutorial online you don’t have to wait to go shopping before you make it.
  15. Your crafty friends come to you for advice on something they are supposed to be really good at.
  16. Your home is full of things you made.
  17. Your friends turn the other way when you start giving things away because their craft cupboards are overflowing from your many gifts.
  18. Your need to make things extends to the kitchen, yard, vehicles, kids’ teachers and beyond.
  19. You are supremely unimpressed with the goods offered at the High School craft fair.
  20. You see a handmade item you love and buy it knowing you could make it yourself but you only have so many hours in the day
  21. You don’t mind being the passenger on long car trips because that just means more craft time.
  22. The minute your kids move out you begin moving into your new craft studio.
  23. You think that hardware stores, thrift stores and flea markets are about the only place to find unique craft supplies
  24. Nothing is safe. If that cat stays there much longer she’s gonna get decoupaged.
  25. Nothing is sacred. My grannies’ quilt will make a lovely pin cushion.

How do YOU know a serial crafter when you see one?

Your list describes me. Once I learn a new craft and enjoy it for a little while I am ready to move on and learn something new. And yes, I could probably open craft store.

I just figure that I can loan out supplies to other people who like to explore Janet. 🙂

I showed my husband your list and he agrees with it 100%. He also calls me the crafting bee, I touch every flower and do the rounds once or twice and go at it again!

I love the “Crafting Bee”. Gotta pollenate! 🙂

Exactly! I’ve often thought Jenny at Craft Test Dummies might have a dream job 🙂

      Hi Mandy,
I shared your comment with Jenny. She agrees. She loves her work! 😉

I certainly fit the description. I get started on a technique and go for months with it. Lately, I have been painted components and making earrings and pendants.

      Gail,
So glad I’m not alone in this!
