Bandanas by the Pool

There is still a whole lot of summer left to make this fun poolside combo!
Bandannas come in so many colors and designs these days that you can make any color combination that you ever imagined… school colors, favorite colors or color, match a theme, Red Hat ladies, patriotic … the list goes on.

And now let’s talk price, I’ve seen flip flops for $1-$2 dollars, bandannas go for about the same price and the hat pictured here is less than $10. So you can MAKE accessories to match your favorite casual outfit that will fit into our budget!

Let’s get started.

Cutting the bandannas goes much faster if you have a rotary cutter.  Scissors will work fine too.

Cut the bandanna into 1 inch strips. You won’t even need to cut the whole thing unless you are doing the flip flops and the hat.

Then with scissors you’ll have to cut the strips in half.

Then simply tie them on to the strap of the flip flop with a double knot making sure the knot is on the OUTSIDE of the strap. You don’t want the knot rubbing against your foot. That would hurt!

One down. One to go.

After you get all of the bandanna strips tied on you may decide that your flip flops need a trim. Go ahead and shorten the length of the bandanna pieces if you want. Simply snip the ends off with the scissors.

For the hat measure the circumference of the area where you’ll put the decoration and add a couple of inches. Cut a piece of ribbon to that length and tape the ends down to your work surface.

You can use just about any color ribbon as it won’t really show but make sure to use a ribbon that won’t unravel, like this grosgrain ribbon.

Repeat the same steps as for the flip flops by tying the bandanna strips onto the ribbon.

Un-stick the ribbon from the work surface and tie it around the hat. Make sure to tie a double knot.

Then secure the knot with a dot of Fabri-Tac glue and cut off the excess ribbon.  If you don’t glue the ribbon to the hat it’ll be easy to pull off later to change colors.

If you want to secure the ribbon to the hat without using glue try fastening it to the hat with a couple of safety pins. That way your bandana/ribbon strip won’t come off until you want it to.

What colors will you use when you make yours?
