Grandfather Clock Shelf

Thrift store find - grandfather clock to DIY

I had to share this photo of the grandfather clock with no guts that I recently thrifted. I paid $40 for it and plan to turn it into a display shelf for some collected (or created) artwork.

At first I thought I would “art it up” and get all crazy with color but the more I think about it the more I think I might just paint it and give it a light bit of aging. My reasoning is that if I art it up too much it will detract from the art I want to display IN it.

By the way, I do have the finial that goes in the top center. I just have to glue it back on.

What do you think?

This will be a project that I work on a little here and there this winter as I have time. I’ll update you as I go along.

I think a grey pickled type finish with variations on the various wood details would be interesting without being overwhelming, especially if the wood grain peeks through.

    Dear Vikki,
My father had a clock just like the one you just got. It was worth a thousand dollars when he
purchased it. Personally I would just try to spruce it up as the original finish. I wish I had one

Thanks Loretta, the finish on this is pretty bad. Whoever stained it really didn’t know what they were doing. And, as you can see, there are no guts. I doubt that it’s worth very much in the state it’s in. But it’s always good to know what it MIGHT be worth.
