How to Make a No Knit or Crochet Loopy Neck Scarf

I see some of my friends lately are experiencing snow in their communities (we don’t have any yet and I’m NOT complaining!).

Colder weather is right around the corner for most of us in North America. Ready or not! 🙂  So now is the perfect time to make this Loopy Neck Scarf. Not only will it keep you warm but no crochet hook or knitting needles are needed. Just your hands.

The hardest part of this whole project is choosing the yarn! I went for purples. Right now I’m having a bit of a “thing” with purple. Just about everything I make has some purple in it.

I used four kinds of purple yarn and with the exception of the yarn on the right I could probably get two scarves out of the yarns.

Lay out the yarn side by side.

Leaving a tail of about 6 inches; gather all four strands and make a loop as shown.

Tie the loop into a knot.

Like so.

Move down a couple of inches on the yarn and tie another loop.

Keep going until this portion of the neck scarf is as long as you want it. I tend to like my scarves on the longer side. Which is probably kind of silly since I’m so short!

Make two more long strands of knotted yarn like the first.

Either get another person to help you or find a way to secure the ends of your three strands of knotted yarn. I put the end loop of each strand over part of my pic machine (used for floral design and made of cast iron…HEAVY!).

Now braid the three strands. Just like you might braid hair.

Cut a length of yarn to 3-4 inches long and tie it around the end of the braid to secure it and keep the scarf from coming unbraided. Repeat on the other end.

Now, go back through and sort out all of your loops; make sure they aren’t tangled and that the loops hang freely.

Cut several more 3-4 inch long lengths of yarn and go back through the scarf securing the braids every so often. Just enough to keep the braids tightly together so that your scarf  will have less of a chance of catching on things.

I’ve made one of these neck scarves each winter for the past few years. I change up the color every time. What color would you choose?

I’m terrible at knots…I’m honestly not sure how I tie a shoe somedays 😉 How do you tie these particular knots? Is there a name for that knot? Am I full of questions?? I love this scarf and may have found what I’m doing for Christmas presents for several folks!

Gosh, Cari I don’t know if there is a name for this knot. I just create a loop and then tie it off at the base. It’s the same idea as tying a knot in a short length of rope. I’m not sure how else to explain it.
It’s a fun scarf to make and to wear. I hope you can figure out the knot. ♥

About how many yards of each yarn does it take for a scarf measuring about 60 inches — finished?

      Hi Rachel!
I think I used 2 skeins of each yarn (the smaller skeins) and there are 6 different kinds of yarn.
      I hope that helps.

This is a great looking scarf! I saw a “loopy Scarf” maker at the store the other day, glad I din’t buy it! I can get the same results by following your directions, without the added cost of an extra tool. Great idea and I love how you can use the fun yarns that would get caught up in a loom! Beautiful, I’m going to start making Christmas gifts for all my girls! Thank you for sharing!

Yay! I love getting comments like this, Barb. I’m so happy when I see readers find a craft they can enjoy. AND you saved money. BONUS!
I hope you’ll share a photo with me of one of your scarves. I love seeing what people create.

My dear friend made me one such scarf as a Christmas gift – and I LOVE IT! She followed your directions, and I must say: this is THE.BEST.IDEA – EVER. I’m totally addicted to this type of scarf – I want one in every color combination! And I’m thinking of making mini scarves to match mine for my dog (if you can follow this link to my Facebook, it’s me, wearing my scarf, and my sweet King Charles Spaniel, Mia, loving it’s softness). Thanks for posting the directions for this – and happy new year to you.
    Greetings from a Florida gal.

      Oh Vianna,
You have no idea how much your sweet comment means to me. I’m so glad your friend made you such a wonderful gift and I’m glad I could help her in that process. The fact that you love it so much and want to make more is the cherry on top of the sundae.
      Happy New Year!

      Thanks Diane!

I love the option of having a scarf that doesn’t look like what everyone else has don’t you?

I’ve been collecting scarves and this one is unique. I don’t have scarf like this before. Got to try this one. I’ll add this to my list 🙂

I am learning to knit right now with a goal of making 10 scarves in 2011. I’m on my third (two were American Girl Doll scarves), but I think this may have to be my fourth. Gorgeous!

I love the scarf! Such an easy project! My daughter has been wanting to learn to crochet but is having a hard time with it (she is only 7) I think this might be the perfect project for her to help me with. ~ Thank you for the inspiration and the great crafty ideas!!!
