Sinamay Harvest Angel

October 20, 2010

What started out as a bit of Creative Goddess silliness has turned into almost a whole week of posts. (Gosh, I love having fun with my work!)

Granted you may, or may not, find these posts useful … but you never know. Besides, maybe, just maybe you’ll be enticed to have a little fun too!

I decided as I was walking through the craft store last week that I was going to pick up some crafting items that I haven’t seen used in a long, long time and challenge myself to make SOMETHING with them.

This is a sinamay angel. You can read more about sinamay, also known as Abaca, and where it comes from here.

This was my first challenge.  I can’t tell you the last time I’ve seen one of these used in a craft.

Ok, to tell the truth I don’t think I’ve EVER seen one used in a craft. What do people do with these things?  I even did a little looking on the internet and couldn’t find any examples. What the heck!

That just give me more freedom to do whatever I want to do with it.  So anyway, I covered the dress in silk leaves all the way up to her neck.

I punched out a couple of hearts from cardstock and used them as the base to build angel wings.

I hot glued a few foam berries around her head for a halo and then added a raffia bow, plastic wheat and a little foam pumpkin.

At first I just laughed and laughed. I thought she was the most ridiculous thing I’d ever seen but then I showed her to a few prople and they really liked it.

There is a part of me that still thinks she is kind of goofy, but on the other hand, she might look pretty cool surrounded by gourds, pumpkins, squash and other fall items on a fall alter.

Vicki, where did you find/purchase your sinamay angels? I’ve searched high and low.
    I’ll await your reply
