The First Steps of a Midlife Reinvention

Believe it or not one of the first steps in a reinvention is not a thing to do.

It’s not a list   #1 – Check, #2 – Check.

It starts with a feeling. Just a little inkling that there is change ahead.

Feeling restless, unsettled, wanting, longing, needing. But not necessarily knowing just what it is that you need.

This feeling can last a day, a week or years before things fall into place.

Maybe you need to learn some new skills and the opportunity to do that hasn’t come along yet.

Maybe you need for some other things in your life to settle down and get resolved before you can move toward your reinvention.

Maybe you simply aren’t ready for all of the change and chaos a reinvention might have in store for you.

The trick is to notice that you feel the longing, needing or wanting. To sit in that unsettled place and just pay attention.

Don’t try to judge, rationalize or in some way diminish or wish away your feelings.

Just sit with it. Maybe make a note of it in your journal or morning pages. Meditate and let the feelings sit with you.

Reinvention, if you are lucky and don’t have to deal with a major catastrophe as a part of your path, is a slow process for many of us. It takes time to grow into the person you are meant to be.

It’s not easy but you will need to be patient and let things unfold as they are meant to. No rushing, cheating or line jumping. It’s a process. It takes its’ time.

And that’s OK.
