Vinyl Words as a Resist on Canvas

A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to meet a wonderful young business owner, Hayden, the owner of Vinyl Words. (You can find her website here.)  I’ve used vinyl words on the Krafty Bloks before but she showed me a new trick…using the vinyl words as a resist.

Supplies:

  • Mod Podge
  • Scrapbook paper
  • Vinyl Word decal
  • Canvas
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Sponge Brushes

Brush Mod Podge on the canvas and then place paper, cut to size, on top.  Smooth down any ripples or bubbles.  Once dried, put another coat of Mod Podge on top to seal the paper.

With a craft stick rub the gridded side of the paper. Peel the gridded side away from the adhesive paper (keep the paper to a low profile, pull slowly and at about a 45 degree angle), place the decal on the canvas, adhesive side down.

Rub over the decal with the craft stick and peel the back of the adhesive from the canvas. Rub over the decal with your finger to seal all of the edges down.

Paint over the canvas, paper and decal. Let dry.  You might have to repeat this process a couple of times to cover the paper.  Let dry completely.

Carefully peel off decal using tweezers or the point of a craft knife to get the decal started.

So now, you are finished… or you can use this as the base of a mixed media piece and just keep going.

Also, If you are very careful, and depending on the intricacy of the decal, you may be able to use it a few times.  Don’t forget too, about using the negative space for this or another technique.  I’ve got some other things I’m working on with Vinyl Words so stay tuned.
