Make a Trivet with Craft Sticks and Wooden Beads

June 17, 2010

This is one of those crafts that started out with a conversation about cooking, camping and craft sticks that left me thinking….hummm? What kinds of crafts could I make for cooking or camping with craft sticks?

Silly. I know.

But I came up with this trivet idea.

Supplies include:

  • Plastic lacing
  • Craft Sticks
  • Wooden Beads
  • Crop-o-dile

Set the depth gauge on the crop-o-dile so that each time you punch a hole in the craft stick it ends up being in the same place.  That will give you more uniformity in the finished craft.  If you are doing this with children you can punch the holes ahead of time.

Holes should be centered and toward one end of the craft stick.

Cut a piece of lacing about 8 inches long and tie a knot about an inch and a half from the end.

Add a wooden bead and then a craft stick.

Alternate wood beads and craft sticks.

I ended up with 12 craft sticks on this trivet. End with a craft stick, not a bead.

Tie the two ends together bringing the beads and craft sticks into a circle.

That’s all there is to it! The trivet folds up small to fit into your camping gear and then spreads out when needed.

I even made a smaller one with the smaller Popcicle sized sticks.

I took a couple of pictures for you with a measuring cup on the trivet so you can see how it works.

This would also make a great trivet for your back yard. After grilling the burgers, set the hot plate on the trivet and you won’t have to worry about wrecking your patio furniture.
