This year we are doing all of our outdoor decorating and sprucing up on a budget. Usually, I spend around $50.00 at the garden center on pots and plants for this front entry area. I like a lot of color here by the front door but I just don’t want to spend that kind of money on plants this year.
Here is a shot from 2006. I had left the planters out over the winter and they got kind of chippy so I covered them in Krylon spray paint. I also painted a few bowling balls nice and bright and tossed them in for even more color.
Lots of color!
This year I went with only one potted plant (that already needs to be repotted) for color. All of the rest of the color comes from the front door, a flag and the bird houses.
You can see how I created the bird houses on balusters in this post from last year; Thrifting Thursday: Bird Houses and Thrifted Balusters. As of that post I was missing a third bird house but I found another earlier this spring, painted it with DecoArt Patio Paint and attached it to the third baluster.
Still lots of color but but fewer plants to buy and water.
I think it’s fun to look at older photos of our house and see all of the things that have changed. Notice the door and windows are different? The house number is different and the chimney has been re-pointed and painted too!
Do you look at photos of your house to see the changes you’ve made over time?
Do you ever look at the photos and wonder, “what was I thinking?”.
Yeah, me too. 🙂
Vicki, came across this article on google. Absolutly loved how you were able to transform the porch of your house, it looks amazing!
I actually sell Real Estate down in Texas, and we have been looking for ways to increase our curb appeal and the entrences to some of our houses and prperties. Needless to say, we might be borrowing some of your ideas!
Thank you, best regards,
Bill.
Hi Bill,
YAY! That’s great to hear. The nice thing about adding curb appeal without plants is that if you have an empty house you don’t have to worry about who is going to water!
I used to live on the NM & TX border and bought my first house ever in Clovis, NM.
Bright Blessings,
Vicki
Vicki I love this idea! It looks fabulous and cheerful and waaay less work then a bunch of flower pots. I may use your birdhouse idea in my garden as it’s a bit bare this year with all our life changes. Thanks for the inspiration! Hugs,
~Deb~
You know, I was kind of sad to not have my usual budget for plants and such but I realized that I just don’t have the time for it this year. The bird houses are so much easier! 🙂
