Jewelry Making: Lucky Lariat

Lucky Lariat

While I’m not a big fan of St Patrick’s Day, I am a big fan of the color green and lariat necklaces. I like them because they are versatile and can be worn in many configurations, they have no clasp (so I don’t have to reach behind my head and try to fasten something I can’t see) and they can be super simple to make but still have a lot of impact. Just like this Lucky Lariat.

Below is a list of what you’ll need feel free to swap and substitute where needed. I originally got my supplies from Consumer Crafts but I’m not sure they carry all of them any more so I will add links to other options too.

Supplies to make a lariat

This is a fun project and a perfect way to practice making wrapped loops. It takes some time to make but will be well worth it.

How to begin the lariat

Unwind the suede cord and give it several tugs to straighten out some of the kinks.

Begin two inches from one end and make a knot.

Every one to two inches make another knot and continue knotting until you get to the other end.

green beads and charms for the lariat

Attach the ribbon ends and put a charm on each one with a jump ring.

beads on a head pin

Put a seed bead, bead and then seed bead on a head pin. Make a simple loop, slide the loop over the sueded cord and wrap the wire around.

Keep going. Add the wire wrapped loops until you are satisfied that the lariat is full.

Lucky Lariat for St Patricks Day

Add charms here and there with jump rings. To wear the lariat fold it in half and lay it around your neck, pull the two ends through the folded loop. Adjust to fit.

I have a post coming up next month that shows a few ways to wear a lariat.

Oh, and by the way, there are so many beads in the bag of glass beads that you can easily make a second lariat with a package of tan sueded cord and a few more charms.

If you have a question about how to use the ribbon ends please feel free to see my earlier post on End Connectors.

You did not cite how long the leather cord should be at start or finish.

      Hi Peach,
It will depend on how long you want your lariat. Put the cording around your neck and see how long you want it and then add 2-3 inches for the knots.
      I hope that helps.

Hi Via Tip Junkie! Sweet necklace! I especially like the last image. Teal is my favorite color with green as a close second!
