Today I have a craft project to share that is a part of a super-fun challenge. I belong to a group of craft bloggers who have taken on a challenge from Scribble Shop. It’s kind of like an “Iron Chef” competition only with craft supplies.
All of the participants received a box of craft supplies and here are the great supplies I received:
- Mod Podge
- Glass gems
- Stencil
- Metallic stamp pad
- Raffia
- Jumbo Popsicle sticks
- Colored pencils
- Glitter embellishments
- Motivation Rub-On Quotes
- Chocolates (which are long gone darling!)
I created this ScribbleShop Challenge Video to share what I found as I opened the box.
So anyway, on to the project!
There was quite a lot of buzz around the internet at the beginning of the year about having a one word mantra. A word that would help you remember your goals during the year.
As usual I had a hard time coming up with just one word so I came up with three – PUSH, CHANGE and GROW. Those three words not only reflect my goals for the year but also some things that have been happening in my life the last several months. I knew I wanted my project to somehow use my three words.
The toughest part was deciding on a substrate. I thought about the cardboard box but it wasn’t the look I was going for. Then it occurred to me that I could make little “rafts” from the Popsicle sticks and use that as a substrate.
I laid out two of the sticks vertically and put 7 more across them horizontally and glued them down with 527 Multi-Use Glue from Beacon Adhesives*. I created and stacked 5 rafts with a sheet of deli paper in between and weighed them down with a couple of heavy books overnight to give the glue time to dry.
After the glue was dry I painted them with Design Master Spray Paint in Glossy Wood Tone*. Just enough to give them a hint of color.
Then I really started having fun.
I adhered a square of scrapbook paper that I inked around the edges to the rafts with Mod Podge and after that was dry I went on to embellish each one further.
On the above raft I’ve used the stencil with a cold colored pencil, a Motivational rub-on and some of the glass gems glued down with the 527 glue.
I had to go back and swipe some of the green marbles in my Vignette in an Egg Carton project to use on this project.
To attach all of the rafts I used my Crop-a-dile* to punch a hole right through the wood and then I wired them together with some rusty wire I had on hand.
Finally, I added the words PUSH, CHANGE and GROW with Thickers Glitter Stickers* and tied a raffia bow at the top.
So in the end, the only product I ended up not using were the round glitter embellishments.
I like it and have it hanging right by my computer to remind me of my goals. Since I spend so much time at my computer talking your eyeballs off it will probably get seen more often here! 🙂

We are posting the finalist on our facebook page http://www.facebook.com/ScribbleShop today, March 30th, 2012.
Stay Tunned!
Thanks for stopping by Scribble Shop! It was a fun challenge and I know I’ll be using Popsicle sticks as a mixed media substrate again in the future. I can’t wait to see who the winner is! 🙂
I am always amazed at how you take such simple items and turn them into something so artistic and beautiful. Thanks for sharing your ideas and talent so that others can have their creativity inspired.
Thanks Elaine for the LOVELY compliment! I treasure moments when I learn that something I’ve done has inspired someone else in any way. It means the world to me!
