Recycled Sari and Pearl Earrings

Do you buy a craft product or supply and then hang on to it because you love it so much you can’t bear to use it up? I’m like that with my small hoard of recycled silk sari ribbon. I rarely use it for anything because I love it so much. I love the color, the texture and the patterns in the little strips of fabric.

Recently, I decided that I really needed to use some of it in a project or two. No more sitting in a bowl on my work table looking pretty. It’s time to put it to use.

Even though these recycled sari and pearl earrings don’t use up much of my stash it’s a start.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

Steps:

Recycled Sari and Pearl Earrings

Cut a length of wire 2.5-3 inches long. Use flat nose pliers to shape the loop/triangle that will hold the sari ribbon and then wire wrap it.

Add the coin pearl to the wire and then create a wire wrapped loop.

Cut a length of sari ribbon, other ribbon or fabric strip and fold in half threading the fabric through the loop/triangle you created.

Cut another piece of wire approximately 3 inches long and begin wrapping it around the folded sari ribbon. Leave a “tail” of wire for the next step.

Slip a short length of chain onto the wire and then continue wrapping a few more times around the fabric.

Put a potato pearl onto a headpin and attach it to the bit of chain with a wire wrapped loop.

All that is left is to cut the sari ribbon to the desired length and then add earring wires.

I frayed the ends of the fabric on the right but left the one on the left unfrayed so you can see it. I liked the frayed ends.

If you are using vintage sari ribbon like I did you may need to use a bit of steam to get the fabric to hang straight. You probably don’t want o iron it perfectly flat but a little steam will help the one on the left to hang better.

Also, I cut each end a different length so they aren’t exactly even.

Call me partial but I like the handmade look these have with the frayed, wrinkled fabric and the imperfect wire wrapping.
