Summer of Love T-Shirt with Simply Spray and Vinyl Words

Summer of Love and Vinyl Words

Here is a fun T-shirt that I made last summer. I liked it so much I’ve just about worn it out! 🙂

I used the SUMMER OF LOVE Simply Spray package and

5 hibiscus flowers from Vinyl Words cut from the strip.  Just cut the strip of paper in between the flowers to get individual flowers.

I played around a lot with the arrangement and number of flowers. At first I had a huge bunch of them mostly in the middle of the shirt. I didn’t like that.

Then I had 5 of them around the neck of the shirt. I was thinking about making it look like a lei. Nope.

Finally I settled on having 5 of them on the left shoulder.  Kind of like a giant corsage. I like odd numbers and asymmetry. What can I say?

Peel the backing away from the vinyl according to the directions.

And adhere it to the shirt.

Rub your finger over the vinyl to make sure it adheres to the shirt completely.  Especially make sure to go over the edges so the spray doesn’t bleed under the vinyl.

Take the shirt outside or cover your work area with a large plastic bag. Rumple the shirt up so that there are peaks and valleys.

Begin spraying off the shirt, spray across the shirt and off the other side. Do this in several directions.

Let dry a few minutes.

Rumple the shirt up again.

Some of the first color (in this case pink) will be in the valleys and stay very pink while some of the pink will be on the peaks and will get covered with the second color.

Spray with a second color.

Spread the shirt out again and rumple and spray with the third color.
You’ll get something similar to this. Let the dye dry a little while.  Just so that the back of the vinyl isn’t so wet.

Slowly peel the vinyl away from the shirt. The good thing about the viny is that it’s strong and pulls off in once piece. It’s not like a paper sticker that will shred and take ages to peel off in tiny bits and pieces.

Let the shirt dry for at least 72 hours before washing. You may want to put it in the dryer for 20 minutes or so to heat set the color but it’s not necessary.

A close up shot shows how crisp the edges of the flowers are! 🙂
Are you ready for a little confession? This was one of my favorite workout shirts until I got a tea stain on it.  Now the stain is covered over and I can go back to wearing it! I have the coolest workout shirt EVER! 🙂
