The Complete Photo Guide to Beading

The Complete Photo Guide to Beading by Robin Atkins

From the Introduction:

“Whether you already own a stash of beads or possess none at all, this book will teach – and show- you many different ways to use beads without having to acquire expensive equipment or materials. Those with no beading experience will find everything they need to begin learning techniques and creating bead jewelry and other beaded objects. Thos with experience in one or more types of beading will find areas where they can expand and enhance their skills”

Being the history buff that I am, I appreciate a book about beading that starts with a history of beads. I find it fascinating that self adornment has been practiced since the earliest days of man.

The section on Bead Stringing is relatively short but packed full of basic information. There are several projects with step-by-step photos that teach some basic jewelry making techniques.

The rest of the book is broken down into two larger sections. The first one being Bead Weaving.

Again, there is a lot of beginner information, photos and instruction.

The projects include this easy Stocking Ornament.

As well as this great Barnacle Brooch.

I have to give the Fan Earrings a try. Not only are they pretty but I’ll learn the circular brick stitch at the same time!

The section that grabbed my attention the most though is the Bead Embroidery. Embroidering with beads is something I haven’t done in a very long time and I’ve been wanting to get back to it.

While this section doesn’t have as many projects per se, it does have this great Sampler of Bead Embroidery Stitches.

The fun and funky piece of art has lots of bead embroidery stitches for you to learn.  It makes me think of cross stitch samplers I made in the 1980’s. A little bit of everything.

All in all I found this a great resource book to have on the shelf of beaders of all levels but definitely a great book to have on hand for beginners.
