The Little’s Have a Picnic – Miniature Picnic Scene in a Glass Cloche

doll house miniatures

I’ve been bitten by a new bug.  (A few new bugs but we won’t get into that right now!)  I’ve always enjoyed miniatures, you know the doll house furniture and accessories, and I’ve often thought that some day I’d like to have one of those big, fancy Victorian doll houses to furnish and play with…some day when my house isn’t full of young people and, I imagine, I will have a little more space.

It didn’t occur to me until recently that I can play with miniatures without the doll house.  I’ve combined my love of making displays and vignettes with my love of miniatures and I’ve started creating miniature scenes.  SO. Much. FUN!  In this scene I was thinking about “The Littles“.  I read ALL of the books when I was young.  They captured my imagination and ran away with it. Soooo I made a small vignette imagining that The Littles were having a picnic.

wood plaque, floral foam

I started with a round plaque – sanded and painted it green.

miniature table, folk art wood stains

A then I stained this little wooden table with Folk Art Stains in Cherry.

floral foam

While the stain was drying, I glued the foam to the wood plaque base with a puddle of hot glue. Then cut away a section for a small alcove or hillside.

miniature doll house, miniature dishes

The most fun part was covering the foam in moss and then adding the LITTLES’ picnic supplies… fancy supplies I have to say.

There is even a dolly laying on the ground.

It’s all arranged so that it looks like The Littles went off a ways to play catch and they’ll be back for dessert any minute. The whole scene is contained in a nice cloche.

Some people might find it silly that a grown woman would play with such things but I had so much fun with this that I don’t care and I’m actually working on more vignettes and ideas.

Stay tuned! 🙂

I’m glad you liked it! And thanks for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. There is a part of me that is still kind of shy about sharing my work.

Not at all silly. Very cute. Makes me want to picnic.
