I remember when I was really young we (my parents, sister and I) lived on my grandparents farm. I always looked forward to the new batches of baby chickens (my grandma called them “peeps” long before the marshmallow confections were produced). The grown up chickens, and especially the rooster, scared me a bit but not the peeps.
We had lots of these aluminum dishes around for the peeps and I loved watching them eat and drink and scratch around in the yard. High entertainment for a 4 year old living in the middle of nowhere I tell you.
Anyway, when I was at Tractor Supply a week or so ago I picked up one of the feeders and decided to make a project for Spring.
If you are a regular reader here you may remember a recent post about some unusual craft supplies I purchased here: Crafting in NE Ohio – My Weekend Craft Supply Haul.
This is a photo of the supplies I gathered from that same trip.
You can see what I made with the egg carton here: Floral Vignette in an Egg Carton
And here is how you can make one too!
Wipe the entire chick feeder down with alcohol. Make sure to clean it very well.
Spray with Krylon Indoor/Outdoor spray paint. I used Watermelon in a gloss finish.
It will take a few coats. Take your time, spray lightly and let dry between coats.
I used Patio Paint from DecoArt in Cloud White to make the polka dots. To create nice, round dots I used the blunt end of a wooden skewer.
I used a smooth, glass jar and filled it up with some wrapped candy. (I wouldn’t put candy in this that’s not wrapped just to be safe.)
Also, I used a quart jar but I think a pint jar might look a little better. Maybe?
I created the label with a punch, paper flower and bit of ribbon. There are sooo many ways this could be embellished!

OH! And I hear that a few of the designers have giveaways but I’m not entirely sure which ones….you’ll have to hop through to figure it out! 🙂
so cute!! how did you keep the paint from going inside when you painted it?
Hi Jennie,
You can push tissue paper into the chick feeder to keep paint from getting inside. I didn’t do that because I knew I would probably only put wrapped candy inside.
I hope that helps.

Too cute! I now know what to do with the one I have sitting in a cabinet!

Awww Thanks Michelle! I appreciate the compliment! 🙂
This is so cute!
