What do you want?
I’m finding myself asking myself that question a lot lately. Don’t worry, I don’t actually ask it out loud – just in my head. Now that we are down to one child at home (and he’s not home all that much) I find myself wondering what I really want.
How do I want to fill my days?
What do I want to do this evening, next week, next month, for fun or for work?
It’s funny, as mother’s and wives we spend a whole lot of years taking care of what everyone else wants – and we are mostly happy to do it too. So when the time comes that we aren’t taking care of the wants of others so much any more we aren’t sure how to answer that question for ourselves.
Me: “What am I going to do now?”
Warren: “What ever you want.”
Me: “Huh?”
I have this theory that this period of time is when women start collecting pets. Other creatures who want. So that we can go back to filling someone, or somethings, wants.
What would happen though if we just sit with the question? What do I want?
What do I really want?
Would you decided that you need to travel more?
Learn a new language or how to cook Indian cuisine?
Is it time to finally finish that book, project or class?
Do you want to explore your creative side? Sister, I’m here to help you with that one.
Do you want to volunteer, start a business, take up yoga?
Ask yourself, “SELF, WHAT DO YOU WANT?” and make a list of the things you might like to try.
Don’t worry about cost or practicality, you may never get to all of the things on the list, but brainstorm and see where your mind goes.
Then just sit with it a while.
Take some baby steps toward something on the list.
You just might surprise yourself.
By singing in a cabaret, launching a new business or even finishing your degree.
What do YOU want to do?
I guess you can also use your skills to help others. Lots of volunteer work needed out there. From people needing blankets/scarfs to building home. Kind hearted people (and I’ve seen little but that from crafters) who are skilled with their hands will always be needed.
P.S. Schnauzer pattern alert: http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/crocheting/toy/schnauzer/134
Yes, Cynthia, volunteering is a great way to learn new things, socialize and help others all at once. Everyone wins!
Oh my! The Schnauzer is amazing!! Some day that tiny crochet skill will be mine. 🙂
