I’ve been waiting and waiting for the release of the new Alice in Wonderland. I got to go see it on Sunday in 3D. I was so excited I was doing my 8 year old girl dance! 🙂
I have to admit I was a teensy weensy bit disappointed. Either it didn’t live up to the hype… or my own imagination. I’m not sure which. It was still a pretty fantastic movie, don’t get me wrong. It just wasn’t as “MUCH” as it could have been. (You’ll understand the quotes around the word MUCH if you see the movie!)
Anyway, this is a brooch I made as an ode to Alice. It was pretty easy to make and I thougt I’d share the process with you in case you’d like to make your own.
- Cut or find a 2 inch circle of chipboard, wood or mat board… I cut a circle out of mat board with an x-acto knife.
- Layer found or purchased elements. Here’s a tip…I always lay elements out and play with their position until I get a composition that I like. Don’t glue anything down right away, just play with the arrangement.
- My first layer is a page from an old book (Not Alice in Wonderland), the second layer is the corner of a playing card. The papers are secured with a heavy duty double sided tape that I scored from a bindery that recently went out of business.
- The crown, fillagree round and watch face are all bits I purchased at Mary Blacks, a little hole in the wall craft store not too far from me. Come visit me, I’ll take you there… the place is AMAZING!
- I placed the fillagree round on the lower portion of the brooch. It has a small hole in the center of it and I punched through the mat board and papers with the Crop-a-Dile (by We R Memory Keepers). I wired the “queen” word bead onto the brooch with a fine gauge wire and then through the back of the brooch (through the hole I made). Extra wire, wrapped around the handle and then formed into a wrapped simple loop, holds the tea cup in place. I found the tea cup at a local craft store with their doll house items.
- I then used the Hot-fix rhinestone setter to embellish the front with some bling and the little gold star.
- The gold ribbon is a found item from a package. I just glued it onto the back.
The piece is a little on the heavy side so instead of the usual pin back I used a heavy duty bar magnet. I like to use magnets because they don’t put holes in clothing.
Anyway, it was a fun piece to make and I’m thinking I will read Alice in Wonderland again. It’s been a while.
Oh, and I almost forgot. I am teaching this as a class on March 27th in Cuyahoga Falls, OH. If you’d like to come send an email and I’ll get you signed up. I’d love to see you there!
