I thought I’d post one of our favorite family recipes. Something for you to make this weekend with the end of the week bread. Mmmmmm!
Bread Pudding
4 eggs, beaten
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 cups milk
3 cups bread
Leave the bread sit during the day, or over night so that it dries out and then tear it into pieces. OR you can tear it into pieces and lay it out on a cookie sheet to dry. However you do it, the bread needs to be really dried out so that it absorbs the liquid as it bakes.
I add some ground cinnamon and nutmeg to mine. And sometimes, dried fruit, such as raisins, are great sprinkled over top before it goes in the oven. This is an OLD family recipe and I think I’ve tried every variation I could come up with. They were all good. 🙂
Bake in a 325 degree oven for 35-40 minutes or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool slightly.
A scoop of low fat vanilla ice cream on the side while the bread pudding is still warm… MMMMMMM.
Post Note: This recipe was first published on my typepad blog September 2010
I pinned this recipe. I love bread pudding. My Husband and I have a running joke that I’m not allowed to have bread pudding because every time I order it in a restaurant, they tell me they are out of bread pudding.
That’s funny, Lisa. I have a problem with Lemon Meringue Pie at restaurants… it just never tastes anything like my moms.
THEN I found out over the weekend that my mom changed her recipe so now my moms pie doesn’t taste like moms pie anymore.
WHAT is this world coming to?!?! LOL!

Thanks! I haven’t made this in ages but I do have left over bread and this will be perfect 🙂
Hi Jealith,
I’m making it tonight for our family dinner. I had WAY too much bread left over. I hope you LOVE it!

It was one of my dads’ favorites too. Let me know how you like it or if you do something different with it. Enjoy! 🙂
Bread Pudding is probably my favorite dessert. Thanks for the recipe. Can’t wait to try it.
