Bookshelf Makeover

We brought this kind of rickety bookshelf home from one of our trips to the Poconos house. (Ignore the pink door behind it… that’s for something else!) Warren says a friend of his made it in college. I won’t go into how long ago THAT was. 🙂

When we first brought it home it was gray and I painted it white. But I still didn’t like it.

So with an abrasive blade on an ancient saw we cut down some galvanized metal and turned it into this.

And with a few of my vintage books I got this…

The top has adult books and the bottom has children’s books as well as some games. I have another collection of vintage children’s toys somewhere else. I may end up putting those two together and have the whole shelf be vintage children’s toys, books and games. Hmmm, I like that idea!

The vintage coat rack is where I hang my aprons, smocks and studio sweater.

You don’t know about the studio sweater?

I have a sweater designated for studio wear because I’m in the basement and it can get quite chilly down here sometimes.

My studio sweater has paint, ink, and thread all over it. There is glitter in the pockets, the metal buttons are all dented and scratched,  and it’s quite an ugly thing. The idea is to only wear it in the basement but you know, sometimes I end up walking out to check the mail in it.

Not that I typically care what the neighbors think but if I see a donation of clothes on my front steps I’ll know that someone saw the studio sweater and thought I needed new clothes!

Vicki- that came out great! I love how you added the metal to the back to stabilize it. We have some good finds from when we lived in Easton PA too…

      Hi Eileen,

Thanks! I love the way it looks too and yes, it is much more stable now.
OH! I had forgotten you lived in that area. You probably wouldn’t recognize it now, it’s so built up!

I love this idea! I am going to try this for my son’s room — perfect for a cool tween.

Great idea Maribel! I worked on a TV show a while ago and we used the metal with the diamond pattern in it (can’t think of what it’s called now) for some shelving and even part of the headboard. It looked really cool!
