I was scrolling through my Facebook feed the other day when I saw a friend mention snow rollers and I had to stop and check it out. I watched this video about Snow Rollers that mentions that they are a rather rare phenomena here in NE Ohio and I thought that it would be cool to see some.
I mean, if I’m going to have to suffer sub-zero temperatures I might as well get some kind of rare weather phenomenon as a bonus, right?
Then on Tuesday morning we woke up to THESE.
Ours didn’t leave any tracks because it was apparently not windy but we still got some pretty cool snow sculptures.
To tell the truth, I didn’t brave the cold until Wednesday when it got up to -2° to take these close up photos but the photo at the top is from my bedroom window on Tuesday morning.
Love the shadows!
Yesterday it got up to just above freezing and the snow rollers aren’t quite as cool looking. I’m so glad I got a chance to see them!
Oh WOW Vicki! I live outside of Phila Pa & never heard of snow rollers. But I have noticed small holes or circle indentations in the snow yet there weren’t any footprints near them nor were they under trees so I have not been able to figure out where they came from. After reading your post I googled Snow Rollers & believe it or not the LA Times had a photo of them, like they get snow in LA??? ..Anyway, wow I am blown away by the existence of a Snow Roller! With all the snow we have had here this winter & due to my loathing of the cold I have spent a lot of time looking out the windows, how I would love to see one of these leisurely rolling across my yard. Thanks for teaching me something new today, I can’t wait to share it with my family.
Love your posts 😉
Hi Mindy,
We’ve never had them here before that I can recall. Maybe your your circular depressions are the beginnings of a snow roller? I bet they look cool!
Haha! The LA Times. I guess that article was for the people who WISH they could see snow.
We are expecting another 6-9 inches of snow overnight and into tomorrow. Sure hoping the temps don’t get too far below freezing.
Have a great day!
