There is nothing like getting your hands dirty in the garden!
I backed up a few steps to see if I had room in this garden for a few more bulbs and that’s when I tripped over the edging of the bed. As I was falling backward I heard two snaps – one in my back, and one in my wrist and I knew instantly that I had broken my wrist.
Those of you who live in warmer climates might think that composting all year long can’t be a real issue but Imagine, it’s -10° actual air temperature,the wind is howling and the snow is up to your knees.
I did some research and found that I shouldn’t plant my potato seedlings in straw bales but I wondered what would happen if I tried growing potatoes in straw that was broken down.
That connection is what I think I love most about the gardening life. Feeling the wheel of the year roll onward. It’s rather magical.
I’m not sure who coined that phrase “the lazy days of summer” but I’m pretty sure they never had a yard. Or a garden. Or even an old house. There has been NOTHING lazy about my summer.
I want to share a couple of garden experiments I have going. If they turn out, great, we all have something to try. If they don’t, nothing lost but a little time. You can’t beat those kinds of experiments.
This year my time in the straw bale garden is a whole different thing. You can’t MAKE me go inside. I’m bloody, bruised and sun burned but I’ve never been happier.
