Why I’ve Banned Myself from the Local Garden Center

Our last frost date in these parts is right around Mother’s Day. It’s this time of year when the weather is warmer (and I’m sneezing from allergies) that I get the urge to get outside and do yard work, plant and BUY plants.

I buy plants, I encourage plants as Mother’s Day gifts and I trade plants with friends and neighbors.

I like creating little fairy gardens, I’ve recently gotten into creating vignettes with birdhouses, flea market finds and potted or hanging plants, and I also just love getting my hands in the soil.

Here is the thing though. Over the past couple of years I’ve gotten really busy and I START new beds and/or new vignettes or I go out and buy a whole bunch of plants only to run out of time to plant, tend, transplant and weed all of the areas.

I can’t help myself, I WANT ALL OF THE PLANTS!!

I actually came home yesterday afternoon from my local garden center a little sad because I only brought one pot of plants home.

Even though these would look SMASHING under the tree I call Big Sister in the fairy garden I’m putting around her base I made a decision that I needed to finish the fairy garden (which I started last summer and didn’t finish), get my edible bed planted and clean up another bed that has gotten out of control before I buy any more plants.

So while the exuberant colors in the garden center were practically BEGGING me to be included in my yard I had to get a grip.

It wasn’t easy but it’s no fun watching plants wilt because they’ve outgrown their pots or garden beds being taken over by weeds because I don’t have the time to tend them all.

It’s not fun wasting money that I work hard for.

So I’ve banned myself from the local garden center until I get the edible bed planted, some rocks moved to the new fairy garden and the weed infested bed cleaned out. AGAIN.

Can you relate? Do you have a plant fetish too or are you one of those people who detests yard work?

I think it’s the same as buying up crafting supplies with all kinds of ideas and inspiration… then they sit there for ages until we’ve forgotten what we bought them for. Except the craft supplies don’t die of neglect. 😉

You are right, Sandy. I often come up with great NEW craft ideas when I’m cleaning my studio and come across those neglected craft supplies. Cleaning with a fun side benefit! 🙂
